Make a Lasting Impact with Your IRA

Support Montgomery County Services for Adults and Aging in the Community while enjoying significant tax benefits through a Qualified Charitable Distribution

Give Smart, Give from the Heart

If you're 70½ or older with a traditional IRA, you have a powerful opportunity to support seniors in Montgomery County while reducing your tax burden. A Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) allows you to make a direct gift from your IRA to MontCo SAAC without paying income tax on the distribution.

Your gift helps provide essential services, support, and dignity to older adults throughout Montgomery County, ensuring they can age with independence and grace in their own communities.

Tax-Free Transfer

The distribution from your IRA is not counted as taxable income, potentially lowering your overall tax liability and keeping you in a lower tax bracket.

Satisfy Your RMD

Your QCD can satisfy all or part of your required minimum distribution for the year, giving you greater flexibility in your retirement planning.

No Need to Itemize

You receive the tax benefit even if you don't itemize deductions, making this strategy accessible to more donors than traditional charitable giving.

Give Up to $108,000 in 2025

The maximum annual QCD for 2025 is $108,000 per person. If you're married and filing jointly, you and your spouse can each contribute up to $108,000, for a combined total of $216,000. This limit is indexed for inflation, ensuring your giving capacity grows over time.

Eligibility Requirements

Age Requirement

  • You must be at least 70½ years old when the distribution is made. This age requirement is firm and cannot be waived.

Distribution Source

  • Funds must be transferred directly from a traditional IRA, rollover IRA, or inherited IRA. Workplace retirement plans like 401(k)s are not eligible for QCDs, though you may be able to roll funds from a 401(k) into an IRA first.

Charity Eligibility

  • Montgomery County SAAC is a qualified 501(c)(3) public charity, making us eligible to receive your QCD. Note that QCDs cannot be made to donor-advised funds or private foundations.

Direct Transfer Required

  • The funds must go directly from your IRA custodian to MontCo SAAC. You cannot receive the distribution personally and then donate it to the charity.

How to Make Your QCD Gift

1. Contact Your IRA Custodian

Reach out to the financial institution that manages your IRA and inform them that you would like to make a Qualified Charitable Distribution to Montgomery County SAAC.

2. Provide Our Information

Give your custodian MontCo SAAC's legal name and mailing address so they can process the direct transfer. We're happy to provide this information if you contact us.

3. Specify the Amount

Determine how much you would like to give. Remember, you can contribute up to $108,000 in 2025, and the entire amount must go to the charity.

4. Complete by December 31st

Ensure the transaction is completed by December 31st for it to count for the current tax year. We recommend starting the process well in advance to avoid year-end processing delays.

5. Receive Acknowledgment

We will send you a written acknowledgment of your gift for your tax records, confirming that you received no goods or services in exchange for your contribution.

Important Considerations

  • The entire distribution amount must go to MontCo SAAC. You cannot receive any portion of the funds back as a benefit or service.

  • A QCD from a previous year cannot count towards future required minimum distributions. Each year stands alone.

  • If you make a QCD larger than your RMD, the extra amount does not carry over to reduce future RMDs, though it still provides the tax benefit of not being counted as income.

  • The transaction must be completed by December 31st for it to count for that tax year. Plan ahead to ensure timely processing.

  • Work with your tax advisor to ensure your QCD is properly reported on your tax return.
