Students will explore the creative possibilities of combining various materials to create unique works of art. The course will cover a range of topics including composition, color theory, layering, texture and surface manipulation. Through the process of experimentation and exploration, students will develop their own artistic voice and gain an understanding of the different ways mixed media and collage can be used as a means of personal expression. We'll discuss what artists have produced in the past and how they are exploring this area of expression today. Materials Matte Medium (most important) Small canvas or canvas boards: 8x10, 9x12, etc. Paint brushes, x-acto knife, scissors Papers of various types and textures, including magazines, tissue, wrapping paper, paper with patterns, junk mail, cardboard, etc. Digital elements, such as photos or compute-generated images Paints, including acrylic, watercolor, and gouache Markers, pens, pencils, etc. Scraps of fabric, string, twine, etc. For the first class, students should bring an 8” x 10” canvas or canvas board, and a few of your favorite old magazines for cutting and pasting. BIO I have been interested in art for 50 years and I think the primary driver for this interest is my experience of the aesthetic response. I see something or imagine something that is emotionally moving and want to express it. I see a beautiful painting and want to know how it was done. Development in art requires practice and more practice. Sometimes I think the study of color alone could be enough but there is much more. I like to draw and paint, mostly abstract, do collage, and also use the computer to make graphic designs and mandalas. I have had a career as a retail florist, a painting contractor and faux finisher. Refund Policy Sometimes due to unforeseen circumstances a class must be cancelled. When that happens, we will be happy to credit you for another class or a different session throughout the year. This credit will be good for one (1) year and can be used for any class that has availability and space.
